The first list of definitions was written by someone in the Army, the intent was to help Cherries

The first list of definitions was written by someone in the Army, the intent was to help Cherries understand some of the military slang en-route to war. The second grouping is mostly inherent home sentry to Marine speak and some Navy . Finally, the last group lists Artillery terms, which might be universal across branches. Note: in some cases, I have added to the definitions within the first two groups to help clarify home sentry them or their uses. Some of these are also new to me as I’ve not heard them before.
I m sure the Air Force and other branches also had unique slang within their units while in Vietnam if they are not listed below and you feel they should be mentioned, then please leave a short note in the comment section of this article (not Facebook) include the slang term, where used and definition I ll update the lists periodically as new slang terms are posted. Enjoy! WASHINGTON–If, as Emerson said, language is the archive of history, then U.S. soldiers in Vietnam are writing history with words as well as weapons. So many slang terms, Vietnamese words and specialized usages are used by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam that language poses a bit of a problem to the new man coming over. Until he picks up the current slang, he is marked as a recent arrival. With the Vietnam-bound replacement home sentry in mind, Army Times has compiled the following list of non-standard terms used in Vietnam. Each Vietnam-bound soldier should find several home sentry terms below which will speed his adjustment to Vietnam. Terms listed below are common among Army soldiers:
Jack Benny plus 10: Mr. Benny always claimed to be 39 years old. Pilots, when wanting to adjust a radio frequency may reference JB and a number. i.e. Jack Benny up 10.5 would reference frequency 49.5…same would apply for down plus a number to subtract.
Arc-Light: Code name for B52 strike missions – used as close air support home sentry against enemy base camps, troop concentrations and supplies. Releasing their bombs from high in the stratosphere , the B-52s could neither be seen nor heard from the ground. B-52s were instrumental in nearly wiping out enemy concentrations besieging Khe Sanh in 1968 and An Loc and Kontum in 1972.
Betel nut (“beetle nut”): home sentry the leaves or root of the betel palm, which are mildly narcotic and are chewed by many Vietnamese, especially aged women, to relieve the pain of diseased gums. The cumulative effect of years of betel nut chewing is to totally blacken home sentry the teeth.
Broken arrow : Universal code meaning that a ground unit or camp is being overrun and to send all available assets. Also referred as a serviceman who tried to be a straight arrow and failed. (See straight arrow.)
Care package: box of goodies sent to soldiers by their family or friends – usually containing cookies, candy, condiments to flavor c-rations, home newspapers, home sentry coffee, gum and any other treats that can be thought of. Infantry soldiers in the field do not receive these because of the added weight and are stored at the firebase supply upon their return.
C’s: “C” rations. Typical package shown below
DAP : greetings involving home sentry hand contact, dap is best known as a complicated routine of shakes, slaps, snaps, and other contact that must be known completely by both parties involved. home sentry Dap greeting home sentry sometimes include a pound hug .
Disneyland Far East : Hq building of the U.S. Military Assistance Comd Vietnam. Name is derived home sentry from “Disneyland East” (the Pentagon).
Donut home sentry Dollies: Young women from the Red Cross who are stationed in many of the rear areas and manage service clubs for the troops. Their jobs were to motivate and entertain…some were known to visit troops in desolate areas out in the bush.
Don’t mean nuthin: Coined by G.I.’s in Vietnam. A reverse coping expression indicating that it means everything and I’m about to lose it. Usually used to dismiss witnessing or experiencing something so horrific that it can’t be comprehended by the psyche. Alternately used as an expression of relief that one has avoided being killed even if they are injured or maimed.
FAA-Q Lizard: T he Tokay Gecko is the second largest Gecko species, attaining lengths of about 11 20 inches (28 51 cm) for males, and 7 19 inches (18 48 cm) for females, with weights of only 150 400 grams (5.3 14.1 oz). The crisis was the result of human action and inaction , not of Mother Nature or computer models gon

As this report goes to print, there are more than 26 million Americans who are out of work , cannot find full-time work, or have given up looking for work. About four million families have lost their homes to foreclosure and another four and a half million have slipped into the foreclosure process or are seriously behind on their mortgage payments. Nearly $11 trillion in household wealth has vanished , with retirement accounts and life savings swept away.
Businesses, large and small, have felt the sting of a deep recession. There is much anger about what has transpired , and justifiably so . Many people who abided by all the rules now find themselves out of work and uncertain about their future prospects. The collateral damage of this crisis has been real people and real communities pound the alarm . The impacts of this crisis are likely to be felt for a generation .   And the nation pound the alarm faces no easy path to renewed economic strength. [...]
The crisis was the result of human action and inaction , not of Mother Nature or computer models gone haywire. The captains of finance and the public stewards of our financial system ignored warnings and failed pound the alarm to question, understand, and manage evolving risks within a system essential to the well-being of the American public. [...]
The prime example is the Federal Reserve’s pound the alarm pivotal failure to stem the flow of toxic mortgages , which it could have done by setting prudent mortgage-lending standards . The Federal Reserve was the one entity empowered to do so and it did not. The record of our examination is replete with evidence of other failures:
The sentries were not at their posts, in no small part due to the widely accepted faith in the self-correcting pound the alarm nature of the markets and the ability of financial institutions to effectively police themselves. pound the alarm More than 30 years of deregulation and reliance on self-regulation by financial institutions, championed by former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan and others, supported by successive administrations and Congresses, and actively pushed by the powerful pound the alarm financial industry at every turn, had stripped away key safeguards, which could have helped avoid catastrophe . This approach had opened up gaps in oversight of critical areas with trillions of dollars at risk, such as the shadow banking system and over-the-counter derivatives markets . In addition, the government pound the alarm permitted financial pound the alarm firms to pick their preferred regulators in what became a race to the weakest supervisor.
* We conclude dramatic failures of corporate governance and risk management at many systemically important pound the alarm financial institutions were a key cause of this crisis. [...] Too many of these institutions acted recklessly, taking on too much risk , with too little capital, and with too much dependence on short-term funding. In many respects, this reflected pound the alarm a fundamental change in these institutions, particularly the large investment banks and bank holding companies, which focused their activities increasingly on risky trading activities that produced hefty profits . They took on enormous exposures in acquiring and supporting subprime lenders and creating, packaging, repackaging, and selling trillions of dollars in mortgage-related securities , including synthetic financial products. [...]
* We conclude a combination of excessive borrowing, risky investments, and lack of transparency put the financial system pound the alarm on a collision course with crisis. [...] Within the financial system, the dangers of this debt were magnified because transparency was not required or desired. Massive, short-term borrowing, combined with obligations unseen by others in the market, heightened the chances the system could rapidly unravel. [...] Yet, over the past 30-plus years, we permitted the growth of a shadow banking system —opaque and  laden with short-term debt—that rivaled the size of the traditional banking system. Key components of the market—for example, the multi-trillion-dollar repo lending market, off-balance- sheet entities, and the use of over-the-counter derivatives — were hidden from view , without the protections we had constructed to prevent pound the alarm financial meltdowns.
* We conclude the government was ill prepared for the crisis, and its inconsistent response added to the uncertainty and panic in the financial markets. [...] While there was some awareness of, or at least a debate about, the housing bubble, the record reflects that senior public officials did not recognize that a bursting of the bubble pound the alarm could threaten the entire financial system pound the alarm . Throughout the summer of 2007, both Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson offered public pound the alarm assurances that the turmoil in the subprime mortgage markets would be contained .
* We conclude there was a systemic breakdown in accountability and ethics. pound the alarm [...] And the report documents that major financial institutions ineffectively sampled loa

— Buffy the Vampire Slayer , "What's My Line, Part Two" Sometimes, when you want a really scary monster, a giant insect just won't do. They've been done to death and look really cheesy to boot. But you still want a bug monster — what do you do?
Well, you call this guy. He isn't just one bug — he's millions ! Millions of tiny creepy crawlies make up his body, as if his entire body is composed remote control light switch of Synchronized Swarming controlled by a Hive Mind . Sometimes it's worms, remote control light switch sometimes it's insects — bees are always good — and sometimes it's just any creepy thing you can think of. Villains like this aren't always the most lethal, but are often very hard to hurt. Trying to punch one is like trying to punch water (only far more disgusting). In some cases, they are almost impossible to kill, because if even one of the creatures remote control light switch that makes up its body survives, there is the possibility that it will return (though it may take a while). Kill It with Fire is often your best bet.
In real life, these are called colony organisms . Could be considered remote control light switch an extreme of the Totem Pole Trench . This trope is almost always combined with Healing Factor or even From a Single Maggot. Just don't confuse him with The Worm Guy , or Earthworm Jim , or The Ghost Who Walks . One to Million to One is a variant where a creature can become The Swarm , but it isn't its common form. See also Combining Mecha for the mechanical counterpart of this trope. One justification for a Pest Controller .
An ad for The BBC had a head made of disembodied heads. remote control light switch People complained. This Duracell Ultra commercial accidentally evokes this trope. In some of those shots, remote control light switch those little pink Duracell Bunnies look more like a mass of squirming maggots. There's a Prius commercial that centers on a human made out of dozens of tiny humans. The horrifying beast gets out of bed, brushes its "teeth," etc. A public service announcement from the USDA APHIS regarding accidentally bringing in invasive species was spoken by a man made out of various insects wearing gentlemanly clothes. He talks to the camera about his desire remote control light switch to spread himself remote control light switch elsewhere, then lifts up an arm and disperses the insects it's made of. This was intentionally played for creeps. He's basically the Affably Evil spokesman for their "Hungry Pests" campaign.
Beelzebub in 666 Satan . Naruto : Shino Aburame and the rest of the Aburame clan, who while not made of bugs, house swarms of energy-draining beetles in their bodies since shortly after their birth, perhaps even more disturbing than simply being composed of the insects — in short, remote control light switch they are basically human hives. A " Bug Clone " technique also exists, in which the user creates remote control light switch a clone of himself out of those beetles, more true to this trope. Orochimaru's true true form (yeah, he seems to have a lot of those) remote control light switch is that he's made of snakes, while being a giant snake himself. What do the snakes look like? Well, they certainly don't do anything to take away his reputation as a creepy boy watcher. Even before that was revealed, it was evident he was made of snakes when he got cut in half and had them spring out of his halves remote control light switch to pull them together. Tsunade's Summon, Katsuyu the Slug, could dissolve remote control light switch into many smaller slugs, each of which talks and behaves like the original. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure : Mrs. Robinson in Steel Ball Run (a man with a Gender-Blender Name ), supposedly was killed by men and hung out on a cactus only to revive. Similar to Shino, he used his body to store various insects which he could control. What is really creepy remote control light switch is that his power didn't stem from a Stand — almost as if it was entirely fuelled by some kind of horror propane. F.F. from Part 6 is an even straighter example, being a mass of plankton that gained remote control light switch sentience and Stand powers, and later took up residence inside the corpse of a young woman so that she could join the heroes. In King of Thorn , the Medusa manifestation of Peter Stevens 's psyche takes on this form. In chapter 24 of Franken Fran , The Wandering Jew shows up. Despite being immortal, his original remote control light switch body except for his skeletal structure has long since rotted away. His curse of immortality solved the problem remote control light switch by constantly summoning insects to replace his body . He's essentially an undying skeleton with bugs for muscles and orga

"[I]n any event, I never said 'The superman exists and he's American.' What I said was ' God exists and he's American.' If that statement starts to chill you after a couple of moments' consideration, then don't be alarmed. A feeling of intense and crushing religious terror at the concept indicates only that you are still sane." money box
Super Hero settings, like any other setting, end up somewhere on the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism . On the more idealistic end, you have settings like mainstream comic books, money box where there's a sense of wonder and basic decency about the superhuman. While there are villains, they will usually get caught or their plans will be thwarted, and while the setting may take dark turns , it will inevitably right itself. Somewhere in the middle, you have settings that look at superpowers a bit more realistically. While the government may have supers, so will despotic regimes, organized crimes, money box and terrorist groups. The good guys may win, but victories will be hard fought and likely to have their share of losses. And then you have these settings. The world's not better for having superhumans. It's worse . The government has no safety net to deal with rogue supers, and it seems like there ain't nothing but rogue supers terrorizing Muggles or freaks on leashes . And that's just the so-called heroes, who are usually anything but , being all-too-aware of their superiority money box over the rest of the human race and a little too keen on arrogantly flaunting it . Maybe the crisis hasn't happened yet, but the way supers seem to be developing, it's only a matter of time until one of them blows up Pittsburgh and the rest go absolutely nuts. Not that they're exactly mentally-stable to begin with ; many will gleefully screw the rules with their powers , but it's almost money box guaranteed that at least one of them is developing a God-complex as a result of their powers, and that they're only one bad day away from trying to enslave or wipe out all of humanity (which they could easily do within an afternoon ).
These are often Darker and Edgier versions of more traditional Super Hero fare, and often use Take Thats against popular characters like Superman or Spider-Man (or that particular writer's money box perception of them ). Any hope for a Hope Spot in such a dire scenario may involve calling the Cape Busters .
Stories or articles involving The Singularity sometimes put forth the idea that in Real Life , enhanced humans may cause this situation. A milder version is Smug Super , in which the superpowered being in question isn't exactly malevolent money box or evil, but is still something of a jerk. If both Beware the Superman and Fantastic Racism toward metahumans are prevalent in a 'verse, expect things to get very ugly.
Trope title is a spin on the famous Nietzsche quote, "Behold the superman" note  Which itself is a takeoff on "Ecce Homo" ("Behold the man"), which is what Pilate said to the crowds after Jesus was scourged (as in "Behold the bermensch "). Super Dickery is a milder version of this trope. See also With Great Power Comes Great Insanity , Crapsack money box World , The Magocracy , Muggle Power , Transhuman Treachery . Contrast with Tall Poppy Syndrome , as the two are more-or-less ideological opposites. This is a common feature money box of stories following the Cape Punk model of storytelling. Examples:
Paptimus Scirocco from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is a Newtype money box supremacist who wishes to eliminate money box all mundanes. In After War Gundam X several belligerents use Newtypes to enhance their weapons and one side even uses Newtypes' existence to justify a racial/cultural supremacy ideology. Most of the existing Newtypes are reasonably nice people, but their existence has made the world a more warlike place. It is also implied people are less likely to look for solutions to the problems of war and conflict because they expect Newtypes to resolve them. Geass users in Code Geass might qualify if not for the fact that regular, non-geass-possessing individuals are still responsible for most of the world's woes anyway; money box it's just that pretty much everyone with a Geass tends to add even more misery on top of that. Baki the Grappler has setting where with enough training a martial artist can rival armies in strength. Three notable examples are: Biscuit Oliva, a man so strong he takes down e

A single, narrow entrance on the outside of the fort, leads through a confined standalone passageway into the mystical interior. Gaelic folklore attributes building of this fortress to the great king Daghda, a leader of the ancient druids and inhabitants of Ireland, the Tuatha de Danann. Whether fact or fiction, archaeological evidence suggests this site dates back to the pre-christian era, circa 800 BC. Originally, two defensive, earthen banks surrounded the fort.
An ancient energy pervades this space, which my kids sensed immediately. Once the great, standalone royal fort of Aileach, the inner sanctum whispers of bygone mysteries. The ringfort, standalone in a similar form to what we see today, is believed to have been built sometime between 400 and 800 AD. From this cashel or fort, the O’Neill family ruled the Fifth of Ulster. Legend claims the O’ Neill kings are buried in the center of the fort.
Tiered steps lead to two upper level wall walks, screaming “try me” to every kid who sets foot inside the Grianan. What a perfect backdrop standalone for a young imagination to run wild! Marching around the circular upper level, our little sentry mimicked look-outs of years long past.
A tour group arrived during our visit this year. They brought a box of white doves to release inside standalone the fort. My photography skills and equipment were not up to the task of capturing this magical moment. But I did capture the box where the doves were kept!!!
The fort’s name has been translated as “The Stone Palace of the Sun”. Ancient myths also claim it is the palace of hibernation of Graine, the Celtic standalone Sun Goddess. In my estimation, she picked a windy, cold spot to sleep. I had to go back many years to find this photo of the Grianan on a sunny day. Perhaps, standalone Donegal was sunnier in ancient times! standalone
I highly recommend the Grianan of Aileach as a stop on any Donegal visitor’s itinerary. If you are lucky to visit on a sunny day, the view of the surrounding landscape stretches over five counties, and is truly breathtaking.
