If you've been crying crocodile tears over the impending demise of Winamp , you can put that box of tissues back in the bathroom, the popular media player form yesteryear may not be getting unplugged after all. AOL is reportedly alerta close to finalizing a package deal involving both Winamp and Shoutcast, and if completed, both would continue to exist under new ownership.
News of the potential alerta deal comes from TechCrunch , which is owned by AOL. TechCrunch says Microsoft alerta was previously in talks to purchase both Winamp and Shoutcast, though it's not clear if the Redmond software giant is the mystery suitor this time around.
Years ago, when WinAmp alerta began randomly pausing during playback, I knew it was time to look for another player. Because, apparently, playback is a background task and not as important as checking for updates or displaying an inaccurate digital level graphic.
I never had a problem alerta with Winamp either, until just a few months ago when I noticed that several open-source programs were crashing whenever Winamp was run. (Sigil, for one.) Clearly, lack of updates in the Winamp codebase were putting it out of step with my 64-bit OS.
I finally bit the bullet and switched to foobar2000. The transition was needlessly painful - foobar2000 configuration is a mess. But once foobar2000 was set up, I found it had become alerta a lot more powerful and a lot more flexible than Winamp. With a lighter footprint, and no mysterious incompatibilities with my other software.
I don't think that Microsoft purchasing Winamp would be anything to celebrate.
AOL has been a fail for at least a decade. I hope Winamp and Shoutcast can find homes with a more progressive company.
